I Am Shamelessly Self Involved

12 Mar

I had to submit a headshot for the Sony / WPO Awards as part of my bio that’s possibly going to appear in this years book.  Realising that I didn’t actually have any good headshots of myself I set about trying to take one.  Anyone who’s ever taken a self-portrait (which I often do when I’m model-less) knows how much of a pain in the ass it is, and how down on yourself you can get for being a shit model (that part I’ll reserve for myself so as not to offend any of the good-looking photogs out there…).

Anyway, after about 30 minutes of standing in front of my own camera and trying different lighting scenarios (including  grid-butterfly look that I thought would be more masculine, but just ended up making me look like a caveman because I have such heavy brows) I settled on the ol’ shoot-through umbrella scenario.

Frankly, I think the look is a little soft and even a little feminine.  Perhaps I should wear a bolder plaid next time.

I’ve realised as well through this project that I really need another lightstand or two…perhaps I’ll order one off my favourite Calumet right now…

The Sony World Photography Awards

8 Mar

Well, while this isn’t a win per-se, I have apparently been selected for commendation for my submitted image(s) which placed somewhere in the top 50 of their respective categories.  Out of the 51,878 images I was competing against I guess that’s not half-bad.

My image(s) (very vague, I know…) will appear on the website eventually and be printed in the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.  I’m pretty thrilled, really.  Keep following me for info as I’m sure I’ll be jumping at the opportunity to post links to wherever my work pops up.

As far as I know now, the contest winners (and those more humbly commended such as myself) will have their work displayed in the aforementioned book at the World Photography Festival in London, England from April 26th to May 1st this year.  Although I was offered a discounted rate on tickets and such I can’t even come close to affording this little shindig.  So if anyone out there following me wants to front my airfare, I’ll take your picture and write a poem about you!

Rock and Ice Photo Contest Round 2

7 Feb

Well, I’m apparently entered in the Rock and Ice / Mammut Photo Contest again this year.  Winning this time would be doubly awesome, since the prize is an intense Mammut jacket of glory and a full page spread on the winner.  That would be some nice exposure, I think.

Well, here’s the image as seen in Rock and Ice’s March 2011 issue (and yay!  They spelled my name right this time!):

Rock (Australia) Publishes Vincent on Indian Summer

10 Dec

Back in the Australian Spring of “oh-ten” (which would be just a couple of months ago since the seasons are reversed down there and “Spring” would thereby equate to “Fall” up in here) Rock Magazine of Australia published one of my favourite images from my collection.  Vincent Causse, a petit, little Canadien powerhouse laid down le loi du grimper on a problem called Indian Summer in Hampi, India that had been plaguing us all.  Frankly we were all left a little more plagued by the problem seeing someone as micro as Vincent send this reachy bloc…but it made for a pretty tight shot anyway.

And here’s the original (note the difference in colouration between Rock’s and mine…they took some liberties with the original file…):

Klatring (Norway) Winter Climbing Destinations

11 Nov

It’s gets hella cold in Norway and Norwegians like to tan their white hides in the sun.  Some of these sunbathers are climbers and Klatring magazine has put together a list of this years recommended great Winter climbing destinations just for them.

I couldn’t agree more with their choices…I hate climbing on icy rock and I’ll avoid it at all costs.  And avoiding frozen tendons is how I ended up taking this shot of Joana Aderi climbing in Hampi back around Christmas time in 2009.  Thanks to Klatring for publishing it!
