Gallery Opening / Competition / Wynwood Ghetto Frightfest

11 Nov

Thanks to Twitter I recently found out about an art exhibit happening in Miami that was put on by Cafeina in the Wynwood arts district and Beck’s (the beer).

I entered…and was accepted!

I suddenly find myself on display in the walls of a gallery in a bloodport competition against other (potentially much better) artists from the surrounds.

I suddenly find myself on display in the walls of a gallery and locked into a vicious bloodsport competition against other (potentially much better) artists from the surrounds!

For a few years I’ve been dendrophilically collecting images of tree bark that I’ve deemed to be of particular or peculiar aesthetic worth.  Being as this collection began while I was still overseas during my 1/8th life crisis, these images are from around the world; and being as I didn’t realise that identifying trees by their bark would be so difficult, my preparation for displaying this gallery collection could be described as “heptic” (a combination of “hectic” and “epic”).  Thankfully, my father-in-law is an arborist.

So anyway, here’s some of the gallery, 10 (14″ x 5″) individual pieces from “Alive in the Woods” (also available for sale individually at Your Big Picture Cafe in Davie, Florida or via me, email and a little PayPal love):

The grand hoo-raw opening is this Saturday (tomorrow, November 12th, 2011 from 7 to 9pm) at Cafeina.  There’s live music, drinks, me, some other stuff and some friends.  See you there!

Also, be warned that Wynwood is approximately the scariest place in the entire country.  Flee directly to 297 Northwest 23rd Street
Miami, FL 33127 and don’t look back.

Winning Stuff

19 Oct

Wow, I have been way out with maintaining this blog.  Sorry to those of you who’ve been following along.

So I apparently won 3rd place in this years Rock & Ice / Mammut Photo Contest.  Last year I wrangled 1st place with that image of Stephan.  This year I roped it with the image of Vincent.  Apparently, Hampi was good to me!

It sounds like I’ll be receiving a Mammut Smart Belay device in the mail soon!  I’m pretty excited to use this thing.  It’s like a Grigri without all the extra mechanics and weight.

However, this does mean that I’ll now have something like 5 different belay devices.  So, uh, anyone wanna learn how to climb?

The Sony World Photography Awards

8 Mar

Well, while this isn’t a win per-se, I have apparently been selected for commendation for my submitted image(s) which placed somewhere in the top 50 of their respective categories.  Out of the 51,878 images I was competing against I guess that’s not half-bad.

My image(s) (very vague, I know…) will appear on the website eventually and be printed in the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.  I’m pretty thrilled, really.  Keep following me for info as I’m sure I’ll be jumping at the opportunity to post links to wherever my work pops up.

As far as I know now, the contest winners (and those more humbly commended such as myself) will have their work displayed in the aforementioned book at the World Photography Festival in London, England from April 26th to May 1st this year.  Although I was offered a discounted rate on tickets and such I can’t even come close to affording this little shindig.  So if anyone out there following me wants to front my airfare, I’ll take your picture and write a poem about you!

Rock and Ice Photo Contest Round 2

7 Feb

Well, I’m apparently entered in the Rock and Ice / Mammut Photo Contest again this year.  Winning this time would be doubly awesome, since the prize is an intense Mammut jacket of glory and a full page spread on the winner.  That would be some nice exposure, I think.

Well, here’s the image as seen in Rock and Ice’s March 2011 issue (and yay!  They spelled my name right this time!):

Confirmed Win!

29 Oct 3rd Annual Rock and Ice/Mammut Photo Contest Winners

Thanks to the readers and editors of Rock and Ice Magazine for choosing my photo as this year’s Rock and Ice/Mammut Photo Contest winner!  I will soon be receiving a totally awesome Mammut Ultimate Hoodie (preferably in red) in the mail…which will assuage the pain of seeing my name misspelled thusly.

Thanks Stephan...for taping your hands in this weird way and allowing me to feel the thrill of the win.
